Cruise for a Cause 6 – June 1, 2006

Hasnain Moldena, the owner of Timothy’s World Coffee in downtown Oakville, hosted a crepe breakfast to promote the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event on July 11. On a glorious Sunday our volunteers got to work early preparing the fresh fruit for the crepes (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries), erecting the banners, inflating balloons, and setting up the burners and coolers on the patio.

Chef Peter Tonge who was in charge of making the crepes enlisted the help of his friend Carl Dahl, the Executive Chef of Julia’s Ristorante, to prepare the mix (by the gallon!) and get things rolling. It wasn’t long before the production line was in full swing with the burners going at Julia’s and on the patio at Timothy’s as the two chefs “flipped them out.” Calvie Vernile and Charles Garner had their hands full, literally, preparing the fillings and rolling the crepes.

Kerith McLeod and staff from Scotiabank were on hand to handle the cash and help with the decorations – their knowledge of inflation being put to good use blowing up balloons! Wendy Perkins and her friends from the Wai Nui O Kanaka canoe club attracted attention with one of their outriggers while Ambassador Stephen Cull and the Wheels in Motion volunteers were busy rustling up business and encouraging people to participate in the July 11 event. Oakville team leader and regional coordinator for RHWIM, Jyl Cunningham, had a go at everything and the Honorary Chair of the Oakville committee, Councillor Ralph Robinson, came along to make sure everything was under control. It was!

Our “leisurely” three-hour Breakfast at Timothy’s came to a close shortly before 2 o’clock. The words – hectic, thoroughly enjoyable, 500 crepes, 80 punnets of fruit, and a great bunch of volunteers” – come to mind. However, to do justice to the event you just had to be there!

Next year, perhaps?
