Lots of people turned up on a bright sunny day to participate in the event which was hosted by the Burloak Canoe Club.
Celebrity’s who came along to join in the fun included Oakville’s Mayor, Ann Mulvale, Oakville’s MPP, Kevin Flynn, Councillor Ralph Robinson, Olympic Gold Medalist, Larry Cain, and Melanie Hawtin – Ontario Wheelchair Sports Awards (OWSA) Female Athlete of the Year.
The course of just over 5 kilometres took the participants south to the lake and then eastwards along Lakeshore Rd. before looping up Balsam and down Douglas to Randall St. and back to the canoe club.
We don’t know of anyone doing it twice just for the fun of it ? But, young and old, and those in between, were up to the challenge and there was a lot of laughter on the way. Some spirited “rivalry” too between the folks in their wheelchair racers! Most took a more leisurely approach and enjoyed a Sunday morning walk with family and friends.
Back at the Burloak Canoe Club the participants were able to enjoy refreshments provided by The Rude Native, Black Forest Pastry Shop, Jubilee Fruit Market, and Timothy’s World Coffee or simply have a “cold one” at the Breyer’s ice cream cart.
Wai Nui O Kanaka Outrigger Canoe Club entertained everyone with a splendid team of hula dancers and a canoe blessing ceremony. No need to take a trip to Hawaii, just join the Wai Nui club!
Prizes were awarded to the top teams and individual fundraisers, and T-shirts were distributed to commemorate the event.
Our thanks to all the people who made the event possible – the folks who took part and raised funds, our sponsors for their generous donations, the Burloak Canoe Club for hosting the event – and our volunteers who devoted their time and effort to putting it all together.
